Freezing!

Icy morning at Hotellneset. The temperature was -27 degrees C, and with the wind chill factor around – 42 (-43 F). You can see Advent bay and Longyearbyen in the distant.

Svalbard Global Seed Vault

The Svalbard Global Seed Vault (Svalbard globale frøhvelv) is established in the permafrost in the mountains of Svalbard. It is designed to store duplicates of seeds from seed collections around the globe.

Coal loader

The coal loader on Hotellneset outside Longyearbyen was used to load coal from Mine 7. In March 2011 parts of the coal loader collapsed as a result of a storm. Continue reading

Northern light over Longyearbyen

Northern light over Longyearbyen and the Titan crane on Hotellneset. The crane was built in 1953 and was taken out of duty in 1979. It served the coal harbour.
