Arctic tern attack

I was forced to wash my clothes after shooting this scene. The overly aggressive arctic terns was striking my head while bombing me with droppings.

Longyeardalen (Longyear Valley)


Longyeardalen is located between the mountains of Platåberget and Gruvefjellet. The town of Longyearbyen is located in the lower portions of the valley, which is named after the American industrialist John Munroe Longyear. The river of Longyearelva runs through the valley. At the top of the valley you will find the Longyear glacier which is about 4.5 km long.

Gruve 6 / Mine 6


Mine 6 lies in the valley Adventdalen between Todalen and Bolterdalen.

The mine was opened in 1967 and production started in 1969. In 1981, production was suspended, without all the coal was taken out. The remaining amount of coal is estimated to be about 380 000 tonnes.

Autumn in Longyearbyen


It is rare that there is no snow in the end of September. The picture was shot September 24, 2011, on the way up to Platåfjellet. Longyearbyen lay next the bay of Adventfjorden, a branch of Isfjorden.

Coal loader

The coal loader on Hotellneset outside Longyearbyen was used to load coal from Mine 7. In March 2011 parts of the coal loader collapsed as a result of a storm. Continue reading

Ropeway in Endalen

In Endalen outside Longyearbyen there are several support pillars after the cable car ropeway that went from Mine 5, via Longyearbyen, to Hotellneset where coal was stored in anticipation of the shipping season.
